Dornoch is a Royal Burgh in east Sutherland, designated a National Scenic Area in the Highlands of Scotland. Dornoch is situated on the coast of the Moray Firth at the north shore of the Dornoch Firth. In 2005 Dornoch became the first Fair-trade town in the Highlands. Dornoch is an ancient small town with settlements dating back 4000 years; the area is abundant with chambered cairns, hut circles, a standing stone and relics of the Picts. Dornoch Cathedral was built in 1224 by St. Gilbert, with the first service held in 1239. Pop-star Madonna had her son Rocco christened here in 2000. Other historically interesting features include the Bishops Palace a 16th century fortified tower, which is now a hotel, the Old Town Jail and the nearby Witches Stone dating from 1722. There are two golf courses in the Dornoch area including the famous Royal Dornoch Championship course. Ardgay
Ardgay Station is in a tiny settlement in the far reaches of the northern Highlands of Scotland. Surrounded by some of the most breathtaking views available to a visitor in the United Kingdom, this is a small, quiet and private place. Few people visit the area from the outside during the winter months and this small branch line train station is one of the few links between the area and the modern world.
Brora
The best place from which to appreciate Brora as a resort is from near the Golf Club, overlooking the mouth of the River Brora from the north. North of here an attractive stretch of beach is backed by the golf course: whose north end is in turn bounded by Brora's main caravan site, run by the Caravan Club.
Golspie
Golspie lies on the east coast of Sutherland, mid way between Loch Fleet and Brora on the main road north. Originally a small fishing hamlet Golspie was, like many villages on the east Sutherland coast, expanded in the early nineteenth century to house some of those evicted from the inland straths and glens during the clearances. Fishing was the main industry, but the opening of the railway in 1868 brought the first tourists to the area.Inchnadamph
An ideal base for angling...
It would be difficult to find a more majestic and inspiring scenery than that of the North West Highlands, dominated by Ben More Assynt, which is the largest mountain in Sutherland.
There are salmon in six beats, and excellent brown trout in all lochs.
Magnificent red deer roam the hills. Take a short stroll along the road to Ardvreck Castle, built c.1490 by the MacLeods, now a three-storey ruin, from where you can have a clear view the length of Loch Assynt, with its many beautiful beaches and coves along the shores.
Loch Assynt - There is excellent wild brown trout fishing throughout the length and breadth of the loch with Ferox (one of 9 ½ Lb. in 2001) caught in deeper water occasionally by those spinning for salmon. Salmon fishing only realy gets started from mid June on.
Wild Brown Trout - The majority of lochs hold a high population of native Wild Brown Trout to an average of just over a ½ Lb. On a good day up to 25 brownies could be caught, though the vast majority of locals and visitors return most fish except for a brace for breakfast.
Boat Fishing - Renting of boats on most lochs for salmon and or wild brown trout. With pre-reservation boatmen/ghillie 's are available as is Fly Casting Guide/Instruction.
